Week for Combating Drug Addiction and Psychoactive Substances,

In line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research/Scientific Supervision and Evaluation Authority, and as part of the activities for the "Week for Combating Drug Addiction and Psychoactive Substances," the Continuing Education Center at the National University of Science and Technology organized an awareness seminar titled "No to Drugs" on Monday, April 3, 2023, at the university campus.

This seminar was held as part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use and its harmful effects on individuals and society. The seminar aimed to educate the audience about the negative impact of drugs, the prevention methods, and the necessary treatment for those affected by addiction.

The seminar featured two main parts. The first part was presented by Dr. Ibrahim Safa Al-Sayigh, a psychiatrist and Deputy Director of the Life Recovery Ward. He discussed the psychological and societal harms of drug use, and also highlighted the "Life Recovery Ward" project at Al-Hussein Hospital in Dhi Qar, which focuses on treating victims of addiction and mental health crises.

The second part of the seminar was presented by Colonel Riyad Issa Kazem, Deputy Director of the Anti-Drug Department. He provided statistics on the prevalence of drug use in Iraq compared to other countries, discussed the most common types of drugs in circulation, and explained the legal ramifications for drug users. He also touched upon some local issues related to drug use in Dhi Qar Governorate.

This seminar was a significant step toward raising awareness about drug abuse and its mental and societal impact. It provided vital information on prevention and treatment, contributing to the broader effort to combat drug addiction. The organizers hope that this seminar will be followed by additional awareness activities aimed at tackling the drug problem.
